Malton Town Council

I am also standing for election to Malton Town Council
An independent candidate for Malton Town Council.

Dear Malton resident and voter,

Please vote for me on 5th May to represent you on Malton Town Council.

I have campaigned for many years to rid Malton of unnecessary HGV traffic and air pollution and I will continue to push for the building of new slip roads on/off the A64 at the B1257 Broughton Road and a new roundabout at Musley Bank. Vital new infrastructure to enable local people and business traffic to access the A64, including our industrial estates, without having to drive through the centre of town.

The Yorkshire Post review of The Sunday Times ‘Best Places To Live 2022’ said: “Malton has a great food scene but too much traffic.”

Here’s the rub: HGVs are re-routing along the unsuitable Highfield Road, past two primary schools, because North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District Council have collectively failed to provide the infrastructure the town needs to remove air pollution and traffic congestion. This is about supporting local business, not knocking it, and we can all reap the rewards.

“Every breath you take”* contains twice the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide*. Nitrogen dioxide is a dangerous pollutant. It is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that causes cancer, asthma, cardiovascular disease and permanently stunts the growth of the lungs of young children, and despite theses FACTS, North Yorkshire County Council is planning to change the traffic priorities at Norton level crossing and on Norton Road that will increase the concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide to above the UK health-based legal limit. In short, unless it is stopped, North Yorkshire County Council will make changes to the traffic flows in Malton that will make Malton’s air pollution worse and harm your health and that of your children and grandchildren.

Please vote for me on 5th May and I will work hard to rid Malton of unnecessary HGVs and air pollution by providing the basic infrastructure (slip roads and a roundabout) it needs to do its job.

I will call on Yorkshire Water to renew its antiquated sewers to rid Malton of the stink of sewage. Foul Odours and Fine Food make poor bedfellows – it’s just not an attractive look.

I will continue to call for a permanent, electrically powered, flood pumping solution at County Bridge rather than the scrambled-egg-and-spoon race farce of diesel flood pump deployment whenever it rains heavily (Pumps that themselves add more dangerous air pollution to the already choking town). And..‘while I’ve still got the megaphone’:

Where are the Police? Where is Trading Standards? Where is Ryedale District Council and North Yorkshire County Council and Malton Town Council? Where is the proper monitoring and enforcement of the 7.5 tonne HGV restriction over Norton level crossing? You tell me! It is time for the self-proclaimed food capital of Yorkshire to cook up a storm and declare: Enough is enough, Laughing Gravy! Malton residents are being let down by those in positions of power. Malton’s children are being harmed by air pollution that should not be here.

Please vote for me to represent you on Malton Town Council to resolve these and other problems that are dragging Malton down.

Yours sincerely,

Simon
