Scagglethorpe to rival Venice in art biennale stakes!

REVIEW: “Biennale great success”… read the review here!

Scagglethorpe has been chosen to play host to a major art exhibition in February which will feature works by an eclectic mix of international artists who live in the region. Co-founded by artists Simon Thackray and Colin Challen, the theme of this year’s event is “Brambling Fields: Memory and Loss,” but in keeping with the practice of its Venetian rival, participating artists can freely ignore the theme and display works on any subject in any genre.

As well as Thackray and Challen, the other artists are Richard Barnes, Peter Coates, Tina Davy and Catriona Stewart.

Simon Thackray said: “I’m delighted to play a small part in bringing the story of Brambling Fields to the attention of the world. I can think of many ways of spending £6 million pounds of council taxpayer’s money (on new sewers for Malton and Norton, or a new lifeboat, or gas masks) but when we eventually see the joy that this magic roundabout will bring to the people of Ryedale, it will all have been worth it. It will.”

Colin Challen, a former MP, said: “Hopefully in the wake of the wonderful Brambling Fields interchange, with its sweeping curves and beautifully crafted slipways, we will eventually see a network of canals developed, so that Scagglethorpe can rise to the challenge Venice has laid down. As artists, we intend to put Scagglethorpe on the map, and can only hope that planners grasp this opportunity too.”

The exhibition, in the village hall, will be open to the public between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February. ADMISSION IS FREE.
